Your Morning “Gunn” Shot

I found this while trolling on YouTube – it is, in my opinion, the best version of what is already a fantastic song, never mind a phenomenal theme song for a television series. I’ve already put this on my MP3, and have listened to it many times since. Turn up your speakers, and… Enjoy!!

Take Your Both Feet Out…

Robert Degen, one of the writers of the Hokey Pokey, has died at the age of 104.

I have to wonder if he ever asked himself, “Is this what it’s all about?”

Comment? I Can Do Better than That…

In response to the previous post – this was the first place I saw/heard this song, and I’ve been a fan of They Might Be Giants ever since…

Totally Total Eclipse

Ok, it’s admittedly far from my favorite song – in fact, it reminds me of a completely clueless yet startlingly manipulative ex-girlfriend, whom I refer to affectionately as Satan. Nevertheless, I found both of these items as funny as hell (no pun intended):

The Total Eclipse of the Heart Flowchart, for the scientifically-minded music lovers:

Total Eclipse Flowchart

And the absolutely hilarious “Literal Version” of the song:

I highly recommend wasting some time with Literal Music Videos. I think I may post a few more, as well. Stay Tuned!

Still Alive

The video game Portal, which is explained here,  is a videogame I have not played, I will admit. I was messing around looking at gameplay on Youtube today when I discovered this: a song that is played over the end credits, entitled “Still Alive”. Sung by talented soprano Ellen McLain, who also plays the computer GLaDOS in the game, it is incredibly charming and catchy, as you will discover…

The humor can be attributed mainly to a musician who should be world-famous by now, Jonathan Coulter, but there are some of us who have joined his ‘cult’, thanks mainly to the incredibly clever “Re: Your Brains”. Thanks to Jonathan’s website, we have the lyrics to “Still Alive”:

This was a triumph
I’m making a note here: huge success
It’s hard to overstate my satisfaction
Aperture Science
We do what we must because we can
For the good of all of us
Except the ones who are dead
But there’s no sense crying over every mistake
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake
And the science gets done and you make a neat gun
For the people who are still alive

I’m not even angry
I’m being so sincere right now
Even though you broke my heart and killed me
And tore me to pieces
And threw every piece into a fire
As they burned it hurt because
I was so happy for you
Now these points of data make a beautiful line
And we’re out of beta, we’re releasing on time
So I’m glad I got burned, think of all the things we learned
For the people who are still alive

Go ahead and leave me
I think I’d prefer to stay inside
Maybe you’ll find someone else to help you
Maybe Black Mesa
That was a joke, ha ha, fat chance
Anyway this cake is great
It’s so delicious and moist
Look at me still talking when there’s science to do
When I look out there it makes me glad I’m not you
I’ve experiments to run, there is research to be done
On the people who are still alive

And believe me I am still alive
I’m doing science and I’m still alive
I feel fantastic and I’m still alive
And while you’re dying I’ll be still alive
And when you’re dead I will be still alive
Still alive
Still alive

It’s a great song regardless of the subject matter – why is this man not a music god by now? Go listen to his stuff – Now!!

Bis Zum Bitteren Ende/To the Bitter End

So, being on a bit of a German kick this week, I’ve decided to post another great song, this one by a band I like quite a lot, Die Toten Hosen (lit. The Dead Trousers).

This one is an excellent drinking song called Bis Zum Bitteren Ende, the text of which follows – keep in mind the translation is not exact:

Und die Jahre ziehen ins Land / Through the Years, from across the country

und wir trinken immer noch ohne Verstand / and still we drink without understanding

denn eins das wissen wir gans genau / but we know one thing for sure

Ohne Alk da waere der Alltag zu Grau / without alcohol every day would be grey

Korn, Bier, Schnaps und Wein / Korn, beer, schnapps and wine

und wir hoeren unsere Leber schreien / and we hear our livers scream

Und wenn einmahl de Abschied naht / and if our parting approaches

sagen alle das hab ich schon immer geahnt / I’ll say it’s as I always suspected

As it is a live recording, it starts with some banter to the crowd, as they try to get the audience to be quiet (Ruhe!) so they can start the song. I have loved this song for a long time – hope you enjoy it too!

Ein Bisschen Frieden/ A Bit of Peace

I was looking up ‘Bad Movies’ or some such search term on YouTube, and came across a video that wasn’t very good, quite frankly. However, the background music intrigued me. As I speak German (to, and with a degree), I searched for what I thought was the title, so here it is, apparently from Rammstein and the band J.B.O., the latter of whom I know absolutely nothing about, here’s Ein Bisschen Frieden – this version has German and Spanish lyrics. Even if you don’t understand the words, it’s pretty catchy – I have at least one good friend who will enjoy it as much as I do, assuming she ever visits! Enjoy!

N.B.: This originated with a somewhat vapid-sounding song from the Eurovision Song Contest, posted here. It’s kind of like Buffy St. Marie if the Germans had won WWII. I like the new version waaay better.
